in september, plenty of clouds around and a threat for showers as well. thanks so much for joining us. chilly start, feels like fall. >> lots of 60s and a cloudy, breezy day. the leaves have been falling, more from the dryness than the fall weather. and rain is certainly around. a decent amount south of town. in the metro, it will look threatening but probably not all -- [ no captioner audio ]

up in the next half hour. we are tracking delays on metro. five of the six metro lines, orange, silver, blue, and yellow lines will run every 24 minutes. red line will be 10 to 20 minutes. the green one is operating as usual. and for the next six months, workers will be repairing damage from a transformer fire. and the news is not good. blue, orange, and silver changes will affect all times of the day including rush hour. orange and silver will run every eight minutes instead of every six. a fatal hit-and-run in montgomery county -- was it intentional. the driver struck a pedestrian and did not stop. a short time later they were able to catch up with the

person behind the wheel. the driver may have known his victim and police are questioning him to find out why. a judge is holding a scheduling hearing for the police officers in the freddie gray case. the first trial is scheduled for october 13th and the defense is trying to delay that. gray's death triggered riots in baltimore. it's here, the landmark music festival is going down in washington, d.c. >> the big headliners -- raising money to preserve the national mall. surae chinn is live at west potomac park with a preview. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is where you want to be. west potomac park for the two day event. here we are at the entrance. and you can see right here there is one of the five stages

right there. so all these music stars will be here. there'll be 40 different bands. folks that you mentioned. this is all going for a good cause. what they say is to restore america's front yard. i want you to pan over there, graham, just to see all of this space that's going to be happening, all of these folks. this is with the trust for the national mall, a nonprofit partner of national parks service. and this is a campaign to restore the national mall. there hasn't been a good restoration for 40 years. this is a two day event happening on the west potomac. we'll have much more coming up throughout the hour. >> hopefully, it's going to stay dry and i think it mostly

without. and that concerns him. don champion joins us now with more details on the pope's visit. good morning, don. >> reporter: good morning, mike. the pope is scheduled to arrive in philadelphia around 9:30. he's going to be attending the world meeting of families. and after already addressing lawmakers in washington and world leaders in new york. the trip to philly is all about the everyday cat rick. >> reporter: a felon opened fire killing patrick mcdonald. his partner, officer richard bose was shot in the hip. his family will be welcoming pope francis. >> honestly, you just don't feel worthy enough. >> i couldn't think of a better

family to remember the people of the area. >> reporter: the pope arrives in philadelphia after a stop in new york where he was treated with rock star like adoration. he carried through familiar themes. >> we just kept screaming papa, papa, papa. >> i don't know what to say. i have goose bumped. >> reporter: he urged world leaders to step up protection for refugees fleeing conflicts. at the 9/11 memorial site he parade for the victims of the attack and urged them to bring their peace to a violent world. he drove through central park where hundreds of thousands were on hand. and he wrapped things up with a mass at madison square garden and urged the 20,000 in attendance to reject self- absorption and think of the

needy. around 10:30 this morning, the pope will hold mass at the basilica. that's the basilica of peter and paul. and he'll head to independence mall where he'll address 50,000 people, mostly hispanics from the community. he's going to be talking about immigration and religious freedom. and speaking from the very same podium that abraham lincoln spoke from. the trip wraps up tomorrow in grand style. about a million people are departmented to attend the final mass in philadelphia. what a sight that will be. >> don champion, thank you for joining us from philadelphia. and continuing coverage of the pope's visit. download our new app. washington, d.c.'s tour decure is out today. the event raises money for the

we can see the doppler and a few green blobs. >> you know what? they are not heavy and looks as if the rain is going to diminish some throughout the day. >> feels like fall today. there's a brisk wind out of the northeast. get ready for a cool breezy weekend and i think we'll get sunshine by early next week. let's show you what's happening. all that light green off to the south is light rain. the yellows and oranges in the outer banks are heavier showers and thunderstorms. it's just not moving much. and i think it's going to shrivel up. fredericksburg south and southern st. mary's county will see showers. here it is. woodstock you might get a sprinkle or two but most will

be to the south. culpeper seeing light rain and showers. and fredericksburg and colonial beach. i don't think it's going to be a washout. a couple of showers and i expect a lot of it to move to the west and southwest. you'll get plenty of breaks. . clouds around this morning and clouds all day long. temperatures climbing to 72 or 73 in town. and a few spots west and south may not get out of the 60s. it's certainly going to feel on the brisk side. and nats and phillies at 4:05 today if you're headed out to the ballpark a light jacket. tomorrow 73 and a few showers and mostly south and west. and monday as warmer air returns, 77. there'll be a chance for a

lots of rain off to the south. and most of it light. we are talking about heavier showers in the carolinas and the outer banks, and i just want to zoom in just to show you that down to the south. culpeper, fredericksburg, the lower shenandoah valley. and the amount of green would be indicative of the rain. and the clouds hang tough. the highs will be in the upper 60s and low 70s. right now low 50s in williamsport. and 50s and 60s to start the day. light jacket and should be mainly dry for the nats game. this is your weekend in d.c. if you love live music. two days all to support the

a multistate investigation. the los angeles health department is looking into nine cases of salmonella at figure and olive in west hollywood. and the d.c. health department confirmed 14 cases were tied to the restaurant here. it's passed inspection and is now open. baltimore city police have released surveillance video of a police shooting. >> on wednesday police say a 19- year-old tried to pass a fake prescription at a drugstore. an officer confronted him. the young man aggressively approached the officer and reached behind his back as if drawing a weapon. the officer killed mccloud and found no web. these next couple of stories are rough if you have kids in the room. a vicious attack was caught on

the nats are playing and a rough outing for jordan zimmermann last night. your new york mets are doing pretty well. >> i grew up on long island. it's tough to let the boyhood teams go. >> if you're going to the nats game, a chance for an umbrella. >> you'll want a light jacket or a sweatshirt. areas to the south seeing light rain. generally a tenth to a quarter of an inch. we've been dry the last six to eight weeks so we'll take the rain. in d.c. and points north it's been a relatively dry morning. i'm going to zoom in and show you. rain in places like fredericksburg but it's drying up a little bit. and luray is seeing rain and

it's starting to weaken. and this is light stuff. south of perryville. and wilderness to lake anna. and we've had light rains. clouds around today for the rest of us. temperatures only climbing to about 72 or 73 in town. some of you will stay in the upper 60s. winds, east, northeast at 15. and they'll gust 20 to 25. the windbreaker or a sweatshirt. 65 in town. and 40s in the mountains. and 50s or 60s will do it to start the day. and currently the winds are northeast at nine with no gusts but we've had gusts in some spots at 25 miles per hour. the highest rain chances will be south and southwest of washington. and it will be cool and breezy for the nats and phillies and

i'm surae chinn. at west potomac park, this is where everything is happening. 40 bands on five stages at the landmark music festival. there's going to be a kids area. ten and under are free. and all for a good cause, to raise millions of dollars for our landmarks, monuments, and memorials. some are crumbling. the event timing is 12:00 to 10:00. surae chinn wusa 9. and crews are working on five of the six metro lines. orange, silver, blue, and yellow, trains run 24 minutes. ten to 20 on the red line. the green line is unaffected. police want to know if a hit-and-run in clarksburg was intentional. it happened friday afternoon.
